More Than Just Your Muscles
What is Myofascial Work?
Have you ever felt a tight spot in your back, a pulling sensation in your neck, or stiffness that makes it difficult to turn your head comfortably?
Sometimes, the muscles are only part of the story.
Myofascial work is a hands-on approach that focuses on muscles AND the fascia surrounding them.
Fascia is a network of connective tissue that surrounds and connects muscles and other structures throughout your body.
When muscles and surrounding tissues become sensitive or tense, movement can feel uncomfortable, or even be restricted. Myofascial treatment techniques are designed to address these areas and help improve comfort and mobility.
At our office, myofascial work is an important part of Dr. Fortune’s manual therapy approach, refined through more than 20 years of clinical experience.
How Does Myofascial Work…Work?
During your treatment, Dr. Fortune uses his hands to apply carefully directed pressure, gentle stretching, or other soft-tissue techniques to the areas being addressed.
The pressure and technique depend on the location of the pain or discomfort, the sensitivity of the tissue, and your individual needs.
These techniques may help reduce inflammation, muscle tension and sensitivity and improve how comfortably tissues move relative to one another, and make certain movements easier.
Rather than focusing only where you feel the pain, treatment may also consider nearby areas that contribute to your movement patters and overall discomfort.
Think of it as looking at the bigger picture instead of treating one tight spot in isolation. Everything is connected.
Why Might Myofascial Work Be Beneficial?
When appropriate for your condition, myofascial work may help:
Reduce muscle tightness and tension.
Improve flexibility and range of motion.
Ease certain types of soft-tissue discomfort.
Make everyday movements more comfortable.
Complement chiropractic adjustments and other treatment approaches.
Everyone responds differently. Some patients notice a change in comfort or movement during or after treatment, while others may need a different combination or longer duration of care to notice a change.
Why We Include Myofascial Work in Our Approach
At our Practice, we recognize that joints, muscles and connective tissues all play a role in how you move.
That’s why Dr. Fortune may combine myofascial work with chiropractic adjustments and other manual therapy techniques when appropriate. Addressing soft-tissue discomfort alongside joint mobility can provide a more comprehensive approach to your individual healing needs.
Myofascial work isn’t a test of how much discomfort you can handle! More pressure doesn’t automatically mean better results, and pushing too hard may irritate the already sensitive tissues rather than help them settle down. Dr. Fortune’s approach is about precision, not pressure for pressure’s sake. With more than 20 years of hands-on experience, he tailors each treatment to your needs, working with your body.
Your comfort and feedback matter, and techniques are adjusted based on how you feel, and how you body responds.
